A Job You Hate Stay or Go
A Job You Hate Stay or Go In an economy that is being called the worst since the Great Depression, I have changed my job. Twice. I felt like I woke up each day to put my life on hold while accepting a bribe to stare blankly at a computer or to do work at the whim of a supervisor. Holding back my passion and enthusiasm, I lasted a year and a half in my first post-college job, and six months at the second. Intuition told me that I wouldnt make it to my six-month anniversary in another desk job, so I finally chose to follow the whispers of longing in my heart. I have become almost more familiar with the fear of change as well as the terror of having no idea what lies ahead than I am with a steady paycheck. Speaking from experience, if you want to leave a job you hate I suggest you make a game plan and write it down. Now throw the plan away. In the short term it may not be possible to make a career change, and there are a number of ways that you can start enjoying yourself more at work while you plan for the inevitable job and/or career change. I highly recommend the blog post, 12 Kickass Ways To Love Your Job and Your Life, written by social entrepreneur, Arvind Devalia, which offers solutions and provides perspective to bring more joy to your current situation. Or to at least make the misery not quite so bad. For regardless of how much you read, plan and consult, happiness is not likely to align with your chronological, biological, professional, and societal agendas. It might not align with your fiscal agenda either, but by the time you are happy you may find the other agendas less pressing. There is overwhelming scientific and anecdotal evidence that fame and fortune contribute to happiness only to a point. Your salary affords you your basic needs, and that last promotion bought you your dream house, but thanks to the Law of Diminishing Returns, your quality of life increases per dollar earned at a steadily decreasing rate. Eventually, even as you earn more and more money, your happiness stops increasing at all. You apply yourself more and become more disciplined; I just need to earn a little bit more to buy x and y, and THEN Ill be fulfilled, you say. But at this zero-happiness-increase point you still feel something is missing because the new purchases only fill the void momentarily. The truth is, something is missing. The billions and trillions of dollars in the world were unsuccessful in bringing satiety, even temporarily, to the enormous emptiness that lies inside you. It is okay to choose to be distracted from the emptiness for the rest of your life by shiny new gadgets surrounding us, for in the face of familiarity and knowing, daunting is the darkness and turmoil of not knowing what lies ahead and relying solely on the enormous space within you. But I am here to tell you, do not fear the emptiness. This is where the first inklings of true success start to grow, for creation is only formed out of this rich, dark emptiness. The blog Zen Habits writes about The No. 1 Habit of Highly Creative People by questioning known creatives about the habits that they consider important to their creativity. The habit that stood out the most was the need for solitude.Creativity needs to have space to flourish where there is no threat of cell phones, traffic lights, or holiday sales to momentarily distract. Chock full of mental calculations and physical reactions, a logical plan keeps the mind in charge, but the unknown- having no plan at all- forces the mind to let go; emotions rise in a space where there is no logical analysis to quench them, where a passionate fire awaits to spark the genius. In my last job, I experienced overwhelming feelings of frustration and betrayal; fear and anger grew as I felt the time for change grow nearer. It took me long months of staying indoors and avoiding the mirror before I learned to appreciate my anger instead of to suppress it. And then, armed with my passion but faced with an unknown future, I felt lost. I am still learning to embrace feeling blind and lost. In my efforts to overcome the feelings of failure and fear, I can see that Ive been trying to force the creative Me out in the same manner that I would pop a zit. Tama Kieves, author and speaker, says about creativity, Your relationship with yourself determines the quality of love and joy that shines in your work. Severity will cause creativity to flee; you must live in your joy for creativity to thrive- through compassion and self-care.Self-kindness and respect will do more good than the negative alternatives. It is of utmost importance that the agenda for happiness be the highest priority instead of the lowest one. Eventually, I will stop crying and throwing my tantrums of hopelessness and rage, screaming at the unfairness of it all. Eventually, I will tire and finally relax into the fear/anger/sadness, and then that too will pass. Anger is only an emotion; it is not bad or good. When unleashed in the spirit of compassion, the anger provides a fire for creation. It provides a spark in the darkness where fear and guilt have no place. To summarize: Ultimately, fulfillment comes from creating, not from regurgitating and manipulating Creativity needs space to grow It needs passion to ignite It needs nurturing through compassion and self-care. Dreams, intuition, imagination, and creativity are the pathways to understanding the chaos and embracing it. Transcribed by Tom Kenyon, the Hathors say that following your deepest sense of joy will lead you to be in the places where you will most likely survive. Your passion will always light the way. It doesnt matter that you cannot see what lies ahead. Nurture yourself and you nurture your dreams. Related: 6 Simple Steps to Be Happier at Work. Five Medical Professions That Need Business Insurance
Five Medical Professions That Need Business Insurance When it comes to insurance for medical professionals, most thoughts immediately go to malpractice. However, there are many other types of coverage relevant to the medical profession, whether youâre an ophthalmologist, anesthesiologist, pediatrician, surgeon or a general practitioner. All five of these medical professions will need business insurance. Also known as liability coverage, those policies offer the following benefits. Shielding of Your Assets Your practice can be held liable for any accidents occurring in your office. If a patient slips and snaps a wrist trying to break their fall, you could be on the hook for all costs associated with their treatment and the recovery. If the person decides to seek legal remedies as well, youâll be looking at court costs and attorney feesâ"plus the amount of the judgment if the court finds in the patientâs favor. With adequate coverage, your insurance company will stand between you and those expenses to help keep your business solvent. Bodily Injury As we discussed above, one of the primary functions of business liability coverage is providing medical professionals with protection against physical injury claims. In addition to legal fees, attorneyâs costs and judgments, these policies cover expenses related to medical costs, funeral expenses, and court-awarded compensation if the injured party dies. With that said, itâs important to note this coverage applies only to individuals who are not employed by your practice. Employees will need workers compensation insurance to afford you similar protection in these instances. Medical Expenses If a bodily injury situation should require immediate medical attention, your liability policy will cover the cost of treatment. This also includes most ambulance rides. Property Damage Called into an examination room, a patient inadvertently leaves her new Louis Vuitton purse in the waiting room. Remembering it suddenly, she races back out to the waiting room, but the bag is already gone. Visibly upset, she threatens to sue you for negligence, as she feels you should be able to keep people from stealing things in your office. Her lawyer decides she has a case and takes you to court. This will fall under the property damage coverage of your liability policy. Personal Injury/Advertising Injury These coverages will protect your practice should you, or a member of your staff, encounter a situation in which a case of alleged slander or libel occurs. You will also be protected if a competitor or some other business entity alleges the contents of one of your advertisements caused them harmâ"or infringed upon a copyright they hold. As for malpractice insurance, thatâs an entirely different kettle of fish. However, in your rush to ensure youâre covered in that regard, donât overlook professional liability insurance for your office. Any one of the liability claims above could be exceptionally devastating to your financial situation.

Advice for women turning 30
Advice for women turning 30 This is Caitlin McCabe. Shes turning 30 this week. I met Caitlin through my Brazen Careerist co-founder, Ryan Paugh. They are getting married, and every day I thank goodness that Ryan found her, because I dont have a lot of friends in Madison, and I cant have one fall to the wayside for marrying someone I dont like. Caitlin wrote a thoughtful post about turning 30, which reminded me that I have a lot to say about turning 30. So this post is my birthday present to Caitlin. If you can call unsolicited advice a gift. 1. Dont look to men for turning-30 camaraderie. Turning 30 is different for men and women. Take a look at OKCupid, which is a dating site, yes, but it is also one of the most intoxicating data centers online. Their official blogger, Christian Rudder, does an incredible job of parsing the data from millions of people who use the site to figure out surprising answers to intriguing questions. Rudder parses OKCupid data to find that, women are most desirable to men when women are in their 20s, and men are least desirable to women when they are in their 20s. Makes sensemen select for looks and women select for money. This is not some sexist social artifactthis is just how the world works and you cannot change it by forcing a generation of girls to play soccer. What is also true is that women in their 20s earn more than men. So women feel relatively confident at work. But this switches in their 30s, when men start earning more. Sure, this is a result of a string of career-limiting decisions women make (like, they dont want to be at the Consumer Electronics Show delivering a baby), but the bottom line is that the security women had in their earning power will go down and the mens security will go up. What this means for the turning-30 crowd is that men feel great and women feel trepidation. 2. Approach your biological clock head on. First, for most women, the biological clock starts ticking like an earthquake when you turn 30 and have no kids. I know it is not scientifically proven, but most women will tell you that even if you thought you didnt want kids, if you are ever going to change your mind, itll be when you turn 30. Something weird happens. And dont tell me its society, because the Baby Boomer moms of Gen Xers were vehement that there is no rush to have kids, and thirty year old daughters should focus on careers, and still, Gen Xers felt the crush of the clock at age 30. It is logical that you would panic about your clock because your clock is about to explode. Have you looked at data for mothers who are over 35? Heres a chart from Classhelp.com, and while this is just Downs Syndrome, most pregnancy risk-factor slopes look like this one: But its not like you cant control your dating life. Its all you. If you want to find a husband, youll find one. Just make it a priority. First, you get rid of all the things you know are bringing you down. Junky eating. Junky friends. No exercise. No passion about work or anything outside of work. Fix all that. There are 1000 self-help books to tell you how, but really, you just need one thinga will to change. You will attract who you deserve. If you dont like who you are getting, change yourself. If you cant change yourself, get a reality check. Then just choose the guy. Here are two things to consider: 1. There is no good time to have a baby. Itll always mess up your career, so just do it if want one. 2. There is no best way to choose a mate. Men will change careers, eventually have health problems, make parenting promises they wont keepits astounding how much marriage turns out to be a bait-and-switch. You can control so little, so dont waste a lot of time trying to control for stuff you cantultimatelycontrol. 3. Relish the upcoming decade: it will probably be your best. You know why? Because for women, their 30s decade is the best one of their sexual life. OK Cupid has outstanding data about women and sex. Women overwhelmingly report that they had no idea how bad they were in bed during their 20s, but they got much better in their 30s. By the time women are in their 40s, their sex drive is at its highest and their competence in bed is at its highest. When asked why, women report that their self-confidence and self-knowledge is at an all-time high. The problem is that while women in their 40s are great in bed, they are increasingly unhappy in life. Women in their 40s report the most anxiety, sleeplessness, and pressure than any other demographic, and women, after 40, grow more and more unhappy as time goes on. I, of course, have scoured research to find ways to overcome this statistical nightmare. But, in the meantime, women turning thirty can console yourselves: You are gaining self-confidence in leaps and bounds during your 30s, and your bedroom skills have the same slope as the graph abovebut in a good way. So really, Caitlin, and all you other women entering your 30s, youre entering the decade that is best for women. Honestly, Im hoping Im in my best decade too. But Ill tell you something: My 30s were hard to beat. And Im saying that even though I turned 30 with no job, no boyfriend and no money. So I know youll have a great time as well.

7 Things to Consider Before Signing That Employee NDA
7 Things to Consider Before Signing That Employee NDA Inevitably, in your professional career, your employer will require you to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement to protect their confidential and proprietary information. You may even be presented with one in a job interview, with little time to reflect and think.Donât panic, itâs all a part of doing business.evalConsider these 7 important tips before signing an employee NDA, to ensure you donât handcuff yourself with undesirable, long-lasting obligations that could cause future hassle, or even an unwanted lawsuit. What is an Employee NDA?evalA Non-Disclosure agreement is a written document creating a legally binding relationship between two parties, specifying what information one or both parties consider confidential, and the prohibition of the other party from disclosing it.An employer requires an NDA because it allows their business to operate like a well-oiled machine. An effective NDA yields a free-flow of proprietary information within an organization, crucial for maximizing bu siness performance, without the fear of such information becoming publicly available.Companies strive to keep confidential such things as trade secrets, client lists, technologies, marketing and design strategies, and proprietary relationships. Understand that you are not being asked to sign an NDA because the company doesnât trust you, you are being asked to sign an NDA because it is an important part of doing business efficiently and carefully.Whether you are a senior executive at a company, independent contractor, or a run-of-the-mill employee who is privy to trade secrets, you are likely required to sign an NDA.You should be prepared to handle it with a calm and collected approach to ensure your best interests are protected.7 Important Things to Consider Before Signing1. Understand the documentâs scopeevalConsider what the NDA is asking you to do and for how long. What type of information are you required to keep confidential? What steps must you take to keep the information confidential? How long will the NDA last? The documentâs scope provides a framework for what you can expect to keep confidential and for how long.2. Look for broad languageMake sure the definition of confidential and proprietary information is properly defined. Be wary of broad language that seeks to unreasonably restrict your ability to disseminate information.evalThere are four important categories of information you must seek to exclude from your NDA.Information already known by you or information you may become aware of on your own.Information readily available in the public domainInformation received from a third partyInformation you can prove you arrived at independently, without using the protected information described under the NDA.3. Liquidated damages provisionIf you see a liquidated damages provision, run.A liquidated damages provision ensures if you breach the NDA, the employer will be entitled to a specific amount of damages without ever having to prove there you caus ed actual damage to them.Liquidated damage provisions are often repressive and violate public policy.4. What the consequences of breaching it areevalLook to see if there are any unusually harsh and unfair punishments should you breach the NDA. If the punishment is disproportionate to the breach, hold off on signing. It is also important you make sure your NDA isnât one-sided. Beware of an NDA that imputes responsibility on you for breaches by 3rd parties, including fellow colleagues or other employees, without a reciprocal provision in place.5. The timing of your signatureAll contracts require consideration; a bargained for exchange of something of value between both parties. Most NDAs are signed at the start of employment, so your employment is considered standalone sufficient consideration. However, should you be asked to sign your employee NDA after commencing employment, you may be entitled to ânew and freshâ consideration. Most states require new consideration when an empl oyee is required to sign an NDA after commencing work. Fresh consideration can come in the form of a bonus, additional vacation days, a promotion, or other employee benefits.6. Trust your instinctsIf something smells fishy, it probably is. Although it may seem daunting, it doesnât take much time or money for an attorney to have a quick glance at your contract. A small fee and inconvenience now, could save you years of hassle, hardship, and a potential lawsuit. If you really have a sinking feeling in your stomach about the contents of the NDA, scrap it altogether and walk away.7. You can negotiateYou can always ask to modify the document if you find something you think is unjust or out of place. It canât hurt to ask, and companies are more likely to allow for changes to last-minute or surprise NDAs. Henry Clay so infamously stated, âA good compromise is when both parties are dissatisfied.â With any good contract, you should strive to find middle ground with the other party, s o donât be afraid to speak up, ask for clarification, or express any concerns you may have about the terms and provisions of the agreement.evalNon-Disclosure Agreements are necessary for any company looking to protect confidential and proprietary information. Donât open yourself up to unnecessary litigation for accidentally disclosing information you were privy to ten years and two jobs ago.Although NDAs can seem overwhelming and overly-restrictive, you can better protect your future financial and legal obligations by keeping these 7 tips in mind the next time you are presented with one.

Selling Skills are Required for ALL Job-Seekers
Selling Skills are Required for ALL Job-Seekers Use the Best Selling Skills for Your Job Search Itâs a new world out there. The job market is much more competitive, hiring managers canât afford to take risks by hiring the wrong person, and candidates must be the BEST every step of the way through the job search process. Now, for those of you with sales experience or looking for a role in inside or outside sales, this should be pretty natural for you, right? Wrong. Itâs shocking how few salespeople apply the skills of their own function to their job search process. Pipeline? Non-existent. Selling yourself as a product? Not. Going for the Close? Oops, forgot. So, here are three Selling Basics for all of you in the job market today, regardless if you have any sales training: Pipeline Management. Picture an upside down pyramid. Your job possibilities (leads) start at the top and then work down into real opportunities, interviews, job offers and employment! Another analogy is little device my father gave me as a child: I put a mixed bag of change in the top and the machine sorted them into the quarters, nickels, dimes and penny slots for counting. The core concept of a pipeline is that you need a LOT of job opportunities funneling through at the same time. Most job-seekers I have helped over my 30 year career have one job they want and say âI want to see this one through before I start on another.â Cut the Crap, Get a Job! You must play the odds game, must have multiple opportunities in the pipeline at the same time if you want to see results in a timely fashion. Learn now how to parallel process multiple things vs. old fashion serial processing. You are the product and the interviewer, network contact, hiring manager or Human Resources (HR) department is the buyer. This is NOT about you. Itâs about selling your skills and experiences to the buyer in a very relevant way TO THEM. They have the need and you must work much harder to position yourself, the product, as the BEST product for their need. Like the grocery store aisle for laundry detergent, you donât see the package saying âIâm made of better chemicalsâ or âI am manufactured in a plant in Kentucky.â No, they are talking to YOU, the buyer, with phrases that aim to fit YOUR need like âwhiter whitesâ, cleaner clothes, etc. Going for the close with every communication. This is often referred to as âasking for the businessâ. Shame on any sales representative for making a call on a customer and leaving without asking them for their business. Well, the same shame is earned with job-searching, too. Regardless if you are sending in a resume and cover letter, e-mailing a decision-maker, leaving a voicemail message, you always, always, always ask for the next step to take place. Example: If you are meeting with a network contact who might be able to help you, end with âI appreciate any help you can provide. Specifically, if you have 3 people you can introduce me to, I will keep you posted about my follow up with them.â If you are applying with an e-mail or resume submittal and cover letter, then the close should say âMay I come in for an interview?â If you have interviewed, then your follow up note is not just a thank you, but also should end with âI am eager to hear the next step in your hiring process and am more passionate than ever about the position we discussed. I want to work for you and company name. There are many more sales skills that will help you tremendously. Continue visiting my blog and read some extra books or blogs about selling basics. Cut the Crap, Get a Job and good luck!
